The game Scattergories was a great success as a boardgame for the whole family and no it can also be a great resource for the classroom. It's a great game to work the vocabulary in the native language as well as in a second language.
With my 1st grade Spanish immersion classroom I used it as a center. I allowed the students to move around the classroom with their card to write down the words so they could write down words that they would find around the classroom. This would make them identify words that they could read in the boards and then have to read them to their partner. That way they were practicing pronunciation and memorizing the word easier. The good thing about the game is that it can be used with students of all ages, making little changes to adapt it if necessary.
The game is a great tool to stimulate the remembrance of the vocabulary or even to learn new words from the people he is playing with. The fact that the words that are repeated between the players won't add up to the final score, makes the students to think of a greater variety of words.
The rules of the game are very simple and it won't be hard to explain it to the kids. With a good modeling when introducing the game the students will be able to use it on their own since the first day.
The length of the game could be 6-10 minutes. It's a great resource to use as a center or as a vocabulary activity at the end of the class.
